The Research Colony is inspired by the forward outposts seen in the sci-fi movies over the years.  Get ready to fight over the new discoveries and valuable unearthed resources.  It is specifically designed to be modular with nearly 50 stl files to create unique habitat pods, research labs, communication arrays and even drilling platforms.  No two games ever need to be the same with the endless layout possibilities.   This set works across multiple popular scales without any scaling needed and meets the elevation rules for popular game systems.  Everything prints on your FDM printer without supports.  (Figures shown only for scale)

    Interesting Shatterpoint alternative.

I purchased this bundle to create a new Shatterpoint board. I am very impressed with the quality of the files and how they printed with a 0.6mm nozzle (on a Bambu Labs A1 and A1 mini).

Of note, these buildings are much larger than those found in the core SP set, or bundles such as Fractured City. While still compatible with both, the size of these building make flexibility of layouts more difficult on a 3'x3' board. This, and that it came with no instructional PDF like other bundles I have purchased here, is why it did not get the full 5 stars.

Size should not detract however if you are looking for max impact without needing to print lots of models. If the PDF was added, I would have given this a 5.

You asked and we delivered - now the Research Colony has a dedicated pdf info guide to help with your print planning so you can easily create all the colony habitat variations that you want. Thanks for the great suggestion.

    Surprisingly very, very good!

My first reaction to seeing this set was "meh". Having just printed and painted Pirate Outpost, I thought this set lacked detail and variety. The price was right so I bought it. It's very easy to print and so, so modular., easy to set up, and stable on the table. The sera clip system just works for end pieces, bump outs, and connecting buildings. For Shatterpoint, you don't want the terrain too complicated. It packs and transports easily and is sturdy. The ladders fit perfectly and are stable. For Shatterpoint if you know, you know about ladders falling over. These do not. The simplicity is the genius of this set. I've seen it painted so well on the Imperial Terrain Facebook group which helps a ton. A few tips about printing: I found that two walls and 5% infill was plenty, as these are a little filament hungry, but not too bad. Do you really need to print any lower building pieces? You can stack an upper piece on an upper piece and the upper pieces are fine bottom pieces. Having all upper pieces makes the set even more modular in the long run as bottom pieces can only be bottom pieces while uppers can be both. It is tempting to want to print mostly bump out versions of the buildings. Keep in mind that for the 75mm buildings, the bump outs limit ladder placement to only two sides, instead of all four. Bump outs also make the buildings a little harder to pack to take on the road. They look super cool though, just be aware of these downsides. All in all, it might not be the prettiest or most detailed, but man it works so, so well in its simplicity and will take your SP games to the next level. I found it to be dimensionally so well designed. What it lacks in detail, it more than makes up for it in pure functionality. It can be painted to add lots of variety and interest. I just like it so much more than I thought I would. Don't pass on it. Lastly, even though this set is super simple, I missed the professional touch of having a pdf instruction sheet like the other sets. A nice touch would be for that pdf to suggest how many of each piece to print for a good SP board, but that's just me. Well done!!

    Great set

Very easy to print quickly and the open ends allow for a ton of variation and layout options
